Sims can be customized by changing their genders. This can be either a female or a male sim. Therefore it is possible to choose from a wide variety of clothing designed for the specific genders. For a long time it has been possible to add accessories and body enhancements that fit with the chosen gender. The Sims 4 has decided to remove the gender barriers in CAS.

On 2 June 2016 Maxis announced that there will be a new feature: Gender customization: "For more than 16 years, The Sims franchise has empowered players to express themselves through open gameplay and endless customization. That's why we're so excited that today's free* update to The Sims 4 features an expanded Create A Sim mode with new gender customization options, and gives our players even more ways to play with life. "

The Sims 4 Expands Gender Customization Options

This has created a huge debate on social media, mainly because a lot of people do not agree with gender change and consider it a very sensitive topic for a PG12+ game. Others think it's an amazing update that can cause a breakthrough in the 21st century. All in all, it shows great commitment from Maxis that they are trying to make the game fit with everyone's beliefs and views in the world. Compared to other games in the Sims Series, the Sims 4 is the most customizable game of them all.

Gender Customization

Maxis mentioned: "The Sims is made by a diverse team for a diverse audience, and it's really important to us that players are able to be creative and express themselves through our games. We want to make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more."
